Dear Houston Lawyers Association Members and Supporters!
Welcome to the 2018-2019 Bar year! As I begin my term as President of the Houston Lawyers Association (HLA), I would like to thank each of you for your confidence and trust in electing me to serve in this role. I would also like to thank each of you for your service and dedication to HLA. Bar year 2017-2018 was a great bar year, and I look forward to continuing to work with HLA’s Board of Directors to support the African American legal community as we continue our mission toward advancing equality and excellence in the pursuit of justice.
During my term as President, we are “Focused on Service and Driven by Justice”, with a goal to elevate the three E’s (E3) through Engagement, Empowerment and Execution. During the 2018-2019 Bar year, we seek to partner with organizations that support the mission and goals of HLA.
Part of HLA’s purpose is to address issues involving our membership and the African American community at large. This goal is achieved by our commitment to service by offering scholarships to law students, through our mentoring program with high school and law school students, legal community clinics (i.e. expunction and wills), and by adding to the practice skills, networking and legal education of our membership. We also have an issues committee to address pertinent issues as they arise.
As one of the oldest affiliates of the National Bar Association in the State of Texas, we will seek to strengthen our alliances with the other four (4) affiliates across the state. Through these alliances, we will strengthen the voice of our collective member attorneys and the communities which we serve.
You are probably wondering how you may contribute to HLA’s success during the 2018-2019 Bar year. You can help by doing the following:
(1) Join/Renew – become a member of HLA for the 2018-2019 Bar year. Encourage your friends, family and colleagues to join as well. Our members are the heartbeat of HLA. A voluminous financial membership is the key to successfully carry out the mission of our founders;
(2) Partner – be an active member by participating in projects or bringing resources to the organization to support our work; and
(3) Lead – lead/join a committee, project, or initiative as they relate to the goals of HLA.
To learn more about HLA, the membership benefits and to join, please visit our website at http://www.houstonlawyersasscociation.org/membership/. If you would like to check your membership status, contact our Treasurer, Shelly Davis-Smith at email@example.com. Please feel free to contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I invite and encourage you to follow us on our social media pages and spread the word about HLA on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Share your feedback and input using #HLAHouston and #blacklawyershouston.
It is an honor to serve as President of the Houston Lawyers Association and I look forward to your support and active participation during the 2018-2019 Bar year. Together, let’s make it a great one!
Yours in Service,
Robin L. Burgess
