HLA’S GALA SCHOLARSHIPS

HLA is committed to supporting the future of the legal profession by providing scholarships to deserving law students. This year, HLA is taking its scholarship program to the next level by expanding our scholarship opportunities to aspiring attorneys at every stage—3Ls, 2Ls, 1Ls—and even undergraduates preparing for the LSAT. These scholarships help remove financial barriers and empower diverse legal talent to thrive. Each application is listed below and includes the specific selection criteria and requirements.

Available Scholarships

Three (3) Scholarships of $5,000 each for graduating 3Ls.
Three (3) Scholarships of $2,500 each for graduating 3Ls.
Four (4) Scholarships of $1,000 each for 2Ls.
Four (4) Scholarships of $500 each for 1Ls.
Six (6) Scholarships of $250 each for undergraduate students taking the LSAT.

Application Timeline

Applications open February 1, 2025.
A complete application must be received by 5:00 p.m., February 28, 2025, to be considered for an award.
Winners will be announced on March 10, 2025.
The awards will be given on May 3, 2025, at the 70th annual Scholarship & Awards Gala. Winners MUST be present!

Selection Criteria

A demonstrated commitment to developing and promoting the African American community through law.
Academic performance in law school.
Leadership skills, community activities and/or special accomplishments.
Financial need.

Requirements

Membership in an underrepresented minority group.
Current enrollment at a Houston-area, ABA-accredited law school (i.e., South Texas College of Law, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and University of Houston Law Center).
- For the LSAT Scholarship, current enrollment in a Houston area or surrounding region college/university.
