HLA’S INAUGURAL FEBRUARY BAR SCHOLARSHIP
This year at the 69th annual Scholarship & Awards Gala, Houston lawyers, judges and supporters raised $16,000 LIVE to fund scholarships for February Bar Examinees. This inaugural scholarship is being offered to EIGHT Houston law students OR JD graduates in Houston sitting for the Texas Bar Exam in February 2025. Each winner will be awarded $2,000.00.
Application Timeline
Applications open September 18, 2024.
A complete application must be received by 5:00 p.m., October 18, 2024, to be considered for an award.
Winners will be announced on October 25, 2024.
The awards will be given on November 8, 2024, at the Driving Excellence & Impact Reception. Winners MUST be present!
Selection Criteria
A demonstrated commitment to developing and promoting the African American community through law.
Academic performance in law school.
Leadership skills, community activities and/or special accomplishments.
Financial need.
Requirements
Membership in an underrepresented minority group.
Current enrollment or graduation from a Houston-area, ABA-accredited law school (i.e., South Texas College of Law, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and University of Houston Law Center).
We are now accepting applications from non Houston JD graduates who have relocated to Houston.

Current resume.
Essay - In 500 words or less, please explain how this HLA scholarship will help make a difference to you in meeting your goal of engaging in the practice of law. Also, please include how you plan to aid the African American community through the practice of law. Word Count must be included.
TBLE Documentation of Registration for the Texas State Bar Exam in February 2025.
Documentation of current Houston residency (if an out of State JD graduate).
